Ostrog: a monastery in the rock

A visit to one of Montenegro's well-known sacred places. Make room for quiet and plan your approach carefully.

Include Ostrog deliberately, rather than as another quick stop. Think about how long you want to spend there and keep the return free of compulsory sightseeing. A calm pace matters more than a photo on schedule.

What to see

Ostrog Monastery is associated with St Basil of Ostrog. Its upper complex is built into the rock, with cave churches known for seventeenth-century frescoes. It is an active religious place visited by people of different faiths.

Getting there by car

Before leaving Budva, check the current approach and available parking. Choose a road suited to your driving experience, rather than the shortest distance alone. Allow time for the approach, parking and walking so the return is not rushed.

A suggested plan

  1. Check access and visiting rules before departure.

  2. Leave time for a calm visit.

  3. Plan a rest before the return drive.
